Does anyone know what the fastest car is?

Posted by David David Fri Apr 13 , 2001
If the question is really "what is the fastest production car," For those still taking Sledgehammer. I'd like to quote Reeves Callaway. He says, "of course the Sledgehammer is not a production car, but it shows in a spectacular manner our technical capabilities and proves an 880 hp sports car may be used in a day-to-day manner, similar to any other Corvette."( Maybe somebody can get Callaway to tell us if even a second Sledgehammer was ever built, so they can claim it was a production car. Less than ten would make me skeptical, though. Furthermore, the Banks T/A was offered for sale at up to 1100HP and many from 500 to 750 HP were built, so I'd consider that production if Sledgehammer achieved production status. Based on HP figures I'd say Sledgehammer would be left behind in top speed by the 1100HP model. I haven't found documented evidence of the top speeds of his lesser cars, but here is a quote from Banks' site that talks about HIS Sledgehammer-equivalent T/A:'Having created the power for numerous land-speed and marine national and world champions, the name Gale Banks has earned legendary status in endurance racing. Banks Engineering owns the current records for World's Fastest Pickup Truck and World's Fastest Piston-engine Automobile. For 10 years, Banks held the unbroken record for World's Fastest Passenger Car, an 1800-hp twin-turbo Firebird that blistered the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1987 and took the championship. This "stock-body door-slammer with optional tilt-wheel, power windows and AM-FM with cassette" ran 287 miles an hour, burning nothing but straight gasoline.' ( Now if your talking street legal, you gotta say what street. Remember, the Z06 is not street legal in Europe. The McLaren isn't street legal most places, but maybe nobody would bother you with that after they calculated the speeding fine. Check out the Pro Street Nationals at Orlando Speed World for U.S. street legal cars that go fast AND quick.

hat the hell are people talking about!? The McLaren is NOT the fastest. It's the Corvette Sledgehammer. And I'm pretty sure the Dauer 1994 962 LeMans is the fastest 0-20 time. I think it's 2.9 sec. About the McLaren, it is one of the fastest. And that moron who said it's 300+ mph, what the hell are you smoking!? If so, it'd be faster than a damn top fuel dragster. It goes about 240 mph! Also, there's no chance in hell that the Lamborghini Diablo VTTT can go above 230. It goes about 220. Jon: there os no such thing as a McLaren F1 GTR Longtail. There's a McLaren F1 GTR, but no Longtail.

Ok lets clear things up... first... READ below!! your posting cars that are below what others are :P ok here I go...
Ford RS200 Evo has the fastest 0-60 of production cars...
Koenigsegg CC is NOT the fastest car... its just fast... made by a good company (check out the 1985 Ferrari Koenig Competition Evolution *drool* a nice gas guzzling 1k Bhp :P now thats a car!)
Diablo VTTT is not the fastest... its top is 222 Mph (358 Km/h) production. You can tweak it up another 100 bhp (but that makes it not production ;) and that still doesnt make it the fastest(by far).
as for Andre's modified Nissan sunny ... its not a production car! hehe read the question.
back to Lamborghini... the Canto does in the 240's... but that doesnt make it the fastest :) ... youll see :)
The ford lightning *drool* IS the fastest production truck... but not the fastest car :)
now the Vector Avtech WX-3 is a fast car... it can do an increadible 249mph... anyway... its not the fastest :)
now the 1994 Dauer 962 LeMans was a fast car indeed! man.. with a sweet 250.0 mph (402.3 kph) ... not the fastest.
now this TVR Speed 12... is about the 1995 McLaren F1 LM (the fastest mclaren...but mclarens arent the fastest!!!!! :P) they only gets up to 240mph
no... the Hennessey Viper Venom isnt the fastest... its pretty fast tho... with a top speed of 225-230mph
ok so you are probably bored to death with all these slow cars... lets get to the fastest... as many of you said (and many dont beleive)
the 1988 Chevrolet Sledgehammer Corvette made by Callaway is the fastest PRODUCTION car. and suprisingly the production model (the model they tested the speed on) doesnt even have that good of a cam? and you could easily add another 150 hp to the car!! anyway... its top is 254.7mph (409.9kph) (its only got the 0-60 of 3.9 tho)
did that clear things up? it better... so now you can stop dickering
PS here is a picture of one of thise vettes at a car show... this is the nicest body I found they had.
Posted by dan Fri Mar 30 02:57:47 2001
the corvett callaway c4 sleghammer is capable of 257.8 mph out of show room so stop craping on about mclaren f1s becouse they are slow get that slow

The best made truck ever is the Dakota R/T (250 hp 345 foot-pounds of torque), intake (270 hp), computer (300 hp), 180 degree power-stat thermostat (305 hp), flow-master series 3 high-flow muffler (315hp).

You have posted the Mclaren F1 is the fastest Production car. The definition of a production car from all the car manufactors is a modle that 100 or more were produced. The Mclaren F1 only had 68 produced in its history. So it is not a production car. This info was provided from Mclaren.
Posted by Arlen Sun Mar 25 20:56:40 2001
The Mclaren F-1 is not the fastest Car in the world neitther is the corvette sledge hammer the fastest car in the world was the jet propeled Thust ssc wich recorded speeds in xs of mach 1 (that is 750mph at sea level.respectivly)However the Mclaren f-1 is the fastest Production car available and any one who wants to test this can meet me at a set of lights and we will put it to the test

The fastest car in the world is the Ford GT-90.It goes 235+ MPH,it has 2 turbo jet engines fused together to make a Hybrid v-12.It has quad exhaust and quad turbo. It's one of my favorites.

I'd love to hear how Slix backs up his claim that a Corvette, even a modified one has "much better handling than the Maclaren". I'm a Porsche guy at heart, but I have to admit the Maclaren is offically the world's fastest (production) car. My favourite 200mph+ car is of course the RUF CTR "Yellow Bird" at 213mph back in 1987.

This message is for Chris from Brockport, NY. Actually, Chris, a further test (done by an independant company, SLP) was done on the Camaro ZL1 and it burnt to 60 in 2.8 seconds. Then for accuracy it was tested again, and did it in 2.8. I guess that beats the GT500 huh? What did the GT500 have under the hood anyway?
Posted by Chris, Brockport Ny Tue Mar 20 10:04:24 2001
TO that Chris Costello kid, you got your WRONG!!!! information directly from the General Motors website. This information cannot be considered accurate because GM was the only one doing tests on this car. The FACT OF THE MATTER IS, that the Ford Mustang GT/500 holds the fastest 0-60 ever. this is 2.9 seconds, and still stands. The car has in fact raced against the Camaro ZL1, and beat it by 2/10 of a second. That's right, the GT/500 was clocked at 2.9 and the ZL1 at 3.1!!!! Ford just kicks everyone's ass!!!

The callaway Sledgehammer Corvette goes 254.7 mph.

The Fastest Car going from 0-60 is held by a 2000 Chevy Camaro ZL1 running a 572 c.i. 770 H.P. 683Lbs.Torque that shot out of the hole in 2.7 seconds. 2.7 fucking seconds. It bottomed out @ 230 mph. As for the fastest top speed, that's debatable. The fastest street driveable (one you could drive downa regular street with dips, bumps, and potholes) would have to be a C5 Lingenfelter twin turbo 650 Corvette. It has a top speed of 226 mph, and holds the Vette's orignal aerodynamics. As for really modified and only semi-production, those cars are American as well. The 900 horse Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette drivnen by John Lingenfelter whipped at 254.76 mph, setting the official street legal record. The offical record for a semi-street legal belongs to a 1991 Twin Turbo Pontiac Trans Am with a 355 c.i. small block making 1400 horses. It's top speed of 298 (yup 298) mph makes it the fastest stock bodied production car in history. All of these cars are American? We must be doing something right, huh?

Posted by Nigel mahoney Thu Mar 8 07:52:20 2001
I though according to the Gunniess Book of records the fastest production car to accelerate from 0-60 was the Ford RS200 Evo, developed for group B rally car, in 3.0sec
Posted by SliX Wed Mar 7 20:52:41 2001
As much as some of you would like to believe, the Sldgehammer Vette is not the fastest production car for the simple reason . . . it is not a production car, it is a heavily modified vette. It is faster and has much better handling than the Maclaren for only a fraction of the price.

Enough with the McLaren F1s. They might be cool, but not the fastest car in the world. That honor goes to the Sledgehammer Corvette. The F1 is street legal in the US, but only after a certified company imports it and does all of the modifications to meet US standards. Like with the addition of a front bumper, new headlights, taillights and the removal of the two passenger seats. After someone buys the car they have the freedom to modify it back, but only after they pay the US price of about $1,300,000. And no the engine is not gold, it is the identical block as the BMW 850i

all yall are wrong, the fastest car is Lamborghini Diablo VTTT. is does 0-60 in 2.6 secs! top speed is 255. although the car with the best top speed is the fe-1 grounfighter designed by wally larson

The fastest PRODUCTION car is the McLaren F1(0-60 3.2, Top Speed - 241) I have proof that this is the fastest car. i have a mpg movie of a man on a race track going 391 kmph which is roughly 241 mph, no the wheels did not catch on fire, the fastest 0-60 time is the Ford GT90 (0-60 3.1) there is only one of these in existance.
Posted by Death Los Angeles Sun Feb 18 22:11:40 2001
The McLeran F1, is the fastest production car, it does 232, not 322. The Porche 911 carrera 4, hold the fastest 0-60, at 3.2, in the line of production cars. The engine compartment of the F1 has some gold foil, but the manufacture actually used the same material from the space shuttle to line the engine compartment. Not to be confused with a engine made of gold. The F1 is street legal in the USA, by all laws, and actually is the cleanest gas running car. ALL of the other cars stated have after market modifications, and are pieces of SHIT!
Posted by Riggs cardiff Sat Feb 17 04:57:20 2001
The fastes production car is the McLaren F1, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and the fastes speed reached in one is 240.1 mph (they had to stop coz the tyres caught fire). It has 627.1bhp and weighs 1132kg.
Posted by Randy on February 09, 2001 at 22:25:55:
The fastest car is the Calloway Sledgehammer Corvette. Top speed of 255mph and it was driven to and from the track.
Posted by Helper on February 02, 2001 at 12:13:11:
The McClaren F1 can do 322mph and also its 0-60 time is 3.2. Due to the fact that this vehicle is so fast and produces so much heat the engine is gold plated.

The lambourghini, although I admit being fast, is not even as fast as a Ferrari F50. Then how can the Lambourghini be the fastest car in the world?? When you ask fastest car I hope that you mean it in the terms of me or you going in a store, and purchasing one. Then if that is so then the title is a toss up between the German and the British, with the Mclaren and the TVR Speed 12 which was recently released.

If everyone is asking about the fastest car then we must define terms because the fastest car i have ever heard of broke the sound barrier but I seriously doubt any of us will drive that car at any time, however if we are talking about an automobile that can be reproduced today for purchase, has a full body, full interior, and can be driven on the street this car is without a doubt the 800 hp CORVETTE SLEDGEHAMMER. The car was produced in 1988 by the man!! Reeves Callaway. You too can own one for the meager cost of 400,000dollars, that is of course if you have money to burn. The car reached speeds of 254.76 mph on a set of swet magnesium rims.

Then in third is your Lambourghini Diablo GT
Only a prototype right now but the Ford GT90 has a top speed of 245mph out of a 6.0L quad turbo v12 (720bhp)

217 mph? That is slow compare to the Dauer Le Mans Porsche 962's top speed of 253 mph. With a 0-60 of 2.7 seconds, it is definitely the fastest production car. If you want one, be ready with your Million, I believe that is what the mclaren F1 costs too, so the 962 is a better deal for the money. But 1 million is a lot o' money.

As for the fastest car ever, that record belongs to Thrust SSC which broke the sound barrier in 1998 or 1999 I think. I hope this helps all you people out there looking for petrol nirvana.

After searching the web, I found that the land speed record is held by Andy Green who drove the Thrust SSC to 763.035 mph (mach 1.020) in Black Rock Desert, Nevada in 1997. I found the info in a couple of sites but the one that gives the most info is
